What is PokemonGo?

PokemonGo is latest trend in the marketing world right now. Even if you yourself don’t play this game you have definitely heard about it. PokemonGo is a mobile app that takes your surrounding area and creates an augmented reality game right onto your mobile device.  The goal of the game is simple: To catch all 150 pokemon.

Here is why you should capitalize on this trend:

The app; which was released on July 5, has been downloaded 7.5 million times, has double the engagement of SnapChat, and has surpassed Twitter in its percentage of daily active users.

PokemonGo is the world’s biggest mobile game ever.  At it’s peak, users spent about 43 minutes and 23 seconds everyday playing PokemonGo.

Niantic (the company that created the game) has announced that they will be sending out a game update every two weeks.  This could mean something as small as a simple bug fix or something as large as a whole new aspect to the game.

Niantic has also announced a few upcoming updates to the game that will give players the incentive to continue playing. The first update that was announced is a trading system. This is a feature that has come across other Pokemon games that PokemonGo has yet to implement. Once implemented, players will be able to connect with each other to acquire creatures they have yet to capture. This update is rumored to arrive by December of 2016.

The second update that was announced is PokemonGo trainer battles. Such as the trading system, trainer battles will allow players to connect and use their captured pokemon to battle it out against each other. This update is also rumored to arrive in December of 2016.

The third and last update and by far the most exciting is the release of the next generation of Pokemon.  This update is the update that businesses should be tracking every day. As the game continues to grow, more and more players will continue to catch all the available pokemon. The release of a new generation of Pokemon means a whole new set of 100 pokemon available for players to acquire. Once this update is released the game will be as active as it was on the day it was released. This means a lot more traffic to your business if you capitalize on it. This update is rumored to arrive as early as December of 2016 or as late as February of 2017.

Use the app to generate more traffic to your business

  1.  Request to make your business a PokeStop

Niantic has released the option of making your local business part of the augmented reality by requesting to make it a PokeStop. Adding a PokeStop is the first step in attracting customers as it gives players the incentive to go to your business.

1a. Place down Lures

Placing a PokeStop at the location of your business will increase traffic, but won’t give most players the incentive to actually walk to it.  Once a “Lure” is placed on the PokeStop, it will increase the rate of Pokemon generation in the area for a full half hour which will also increase the amount of players coming to the PokeStop.

A Lure is a powerful tool because they are scarce. The only way they are acquired are through leveling up in the game, through a PokeStop (very rare), and through in-game purchases.

Walter Chen from www.Inc.com gives us how many hours we can get on a PokeStop if we spend $100. “Let’s do the math. With $100 netting you can get 14,500 Pokecoins and an eight-pack of Lures costing 680 Pokecoins:

14,500 Pokecoins / 680 = 21 eight-packs of lures

(21 * 8)/2 = 84 hours

$100/84 hours = $1.19 per hour” (www.Inc.com)

  1. Request to make your business a PokeGym

On top of PokeStops you can also request to make your business a PokeGym.  These are controlled by players from one of the three teams within the game. This is an opportunity to exploit the players that have taken over your PokeGym. Your business can place a leaderboard within the store and offer discounts to the players that have control over the PokeGym.

  1.  Advertise your Pokemon on Social Media

Players will go crazy over a rare Pokemon in area. Put up signs for players saying to follow your social media for updates on the latest pokemon that spawn in the area. When they follow you they will not only just see your posts of Pokemon in the area, but also whatever deals and promotions you are advertising.

  1.  Create PokemonGo Promotions and Specials

Your business can offer different PokemonGo themed promotions such as the PokeGym discount that was stated before.  Another idea can be extended happy hours for the different teams within the game.  The teams in the game are Team Mystic, Valor, and Instinct. Say your business runs happy hour from 4pm to 7pm. On wednesdays you can extend happy hour to 8 pm for members on Team Instinct, Thursdays for members of Team Mystic and Fridays for members of Team Valor
